Wrangles over the vice-presidency embitter the race to succeed Moi

Vice-President George Saitoti survived a no-confidence vote in Parliament on 30 June, which is good news for his political godfather, Nicholas Biwott, now Minister of East African Cooperation (AC Vol 40 No 5). Within minutes of Saitoti's triumph, the two were photographed jubilating in Nairobi's Parliament Road. Biwott calculates that, in the battle to succeed President Daniel arap Moi, the vote will strengthen his KANU-B faction of the ruling Kenya African National Union. Saitoti may have plenty of enemies across the political spectrum but Moi's crony Biwott helps him to out-manoeuvre them.
