An unexpected blast from the past has hit President Joseph Kabila with the victory of Léon Kengo wa Dondo in the 11 May poll for Senate President. This makes the veteran politician - Premier under the late President Mobutu Sese Seko - constitutional number two. It is a strategic position as Kabila's hawks try to remove the parliamentary immunity of his main opponent, Senator Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo.
