Closer and more credible

The presidential and parliamentary elections on 11 August have turned out to be closer and more credible than expected. Now they will be decided in a run-off vote between the two front-runners next month. None of the candidates won the 55% of the vote necessary for a first-round win. As Africa Confidential went to press, with over 98.7% of votes counted, the main opposition candidate, Ernest Bai Koroma of the All People's Congress (APC), had taken 44%.
