The Ogaden's bloody struggle has a wider global dimension

Thirty years ago, the United States National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, declared that ‘SALT lies buried in the sands of the Ogaden’: he meant the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. A small war in Ethiopia’s remote Ogaden territory had grown into a global crisis, involving the Soviet Union and Cuba and contributing to the demise of détente between the superpowers. Today’s bloody struggle in the Ogaden, like that of 1977, has quickly become entangled in wider regional and global politics. It exposes deep troubles for the entire Horn of Africa.
