The real Makoni stands up

Voters are eagerly waiting to see how many ZANU-PF dissidents back the latest challenge to President Mugabe

This may prove to be the week that Simba Makoni and his backers started to turn the tide in Zimbabwe's politics. On 13 February, Makoni launched his independent candidacy in the presidential election, due on 29 March, by describing Zimbabwe as 'a sad country full of fear' and calling on members of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front to abandon 83-year-old President Robert Gabriel Mugabe and vote for a 'new beginning'. Makoni urged them: 'jump off the fence and climb out of your false comfort zone.'
