Parliament is prorogued, politicians are on trial - and bad-tempered elections are due next year

Tempers are fraying as Malawi approaches next year's parliamentary and presidential elections. The all-important Malawi Electoral Commission, which will supervise the polls, has at last been appointed by President Bingu wa Mutharika, who characteristically failed to consult the political parties on its membership. Those parties, while deploring this lack of democracy, have themselves not yet held conventions to elect their own parliamentary and presidential candidates. The party bosses are firmly entrenched.
