The main points of the Abyei Protocol

The then First Vice-President, Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, and the late Sudan People's Liberation Movement Chairman, Colonel John Garang de Mabior, signed the Principles of Agreement on Abyei on 26 May 2004 in Naivasha, Kenya. It begins, 'Abyei is a bridge between the north and the south, linking the people of Sudan', suggesting a unity apparently contradicted by the promise of a referendum on Southern independence in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, of which the Abyei Protocol forms part, the following January.
