The formal processes that must precede next year's general elections get started on 24 April, at the national convention of Bakili Muluzi's United Democratic Front (UDF). The meeting is set to cost twelve million kwacha (US$87,000), guaranteed from the former President's seemingly bottomless purse. Aleke Banda's smaller People's Progressive Movement has also announced its convention, in September.
