Although the establishment candidate Abdelaziz Bouteflika won, the manner of his victory in the 15 April presidential election - with the authorities failing to bludgeon any of his six rivals into competing - led the Algiers rumour mill to suggest that 'Boutef' may be in office for only for a matter of months. A holding operation has been announced, with Prime Minister Smail Hamdani staying on at least until this summer's Organisation of African Unity summit on 12 July.
