Authoritarian notes

Until Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel leant on them, Munich-based security printers Giesecke & Devrient GmbH had a lucrative contract to supply paper for Zimbabwe's considerable demand for new currency notes. In direct competition with Britain's De La Rue security printers, Giesecke & Devrient prints notes or supplies paper for over 100 countries and has often provided currency for the authoritarian end of the market.
