Muzzling the media

A blot on the generally calm parliamentary election campaign was the six-month ban on Rádio Despertar, the voice of the main opposition party, the União para a Independência Total de Angola . The justification given for the ban, issued on 8 July, was that the station was broadcasting to areas 400 kilometres from Luanda, although its licensed range was 40 km. The French media lobby Reporters sans Frontières observed that the law on which the range limit was based had been replaced in 1966 by a new (but unimplemented) one.
