President Yar'Adua has returned home with plans for a cabinet reshuffle as violence explodes again in the Niger Delta

Nobody has told Nigerians what was wrong with their President, who was in hospital in Saudi Arabia from 20 August to 6 September. Things are clearly not well with Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s presidency: political opponents and plotters are capitalising on the mysteries about his health – and speculation that the Supreme Court could still rule against the legitimacy of his election. Yar’Adua’s close political associates and relatives told Africa Confidential that the President was having an unremarkable course of treatment for high blood pressure. They concede that public relations were badly handled but it enabled them to identify the plotters.
