Pirates afloat

The United Nations World Food Programme has successfully appealed to the European Union for protection of its life-saving cargoes of food aid. On 15 September, the EU’s foreign ministers agreed to set up a coordinating centre for defence against the pirates who prey on passing vessels, especially in the Red Sea. The WFP says that action is urgent, as 2.4 million Somalis rely upon its shipments. The result is a new body, EU NAVCO.
