Shake-up in Freetown

President Ernest Bai Koroma has finally shaken up his government, before a vote to determine if he will continue to lead the All People's Congress (APC). In all, nine of 20 posts were changed on 27 February, including four sackings. Several side-steps for well regarded characters look more like demotions. The most significant loser is the Mines and Mineral Resources Minister, Abubakar Jalloh, a geologist whose behaviour dismayed many would-be investors. His Ministry retained its corrupt image, maintained civil servants long used to its ways and drew ever closer to one company, African Minerals; its review of existing contracts failed. Among other things, Jalloh was keen to exploit iron ore deposits under rainforest that the President had promised to protect.
