South Africa's Trevor Manuel and the AfDB's Donald Kaberuka call for a substantial finance package to support Harare's new government

In London for the G-20 summit on 2 April, African Development Bank President Donald Kaberuka told Africa Confidential that Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister Tendai Biti was making headway: ‘Since this global political accord, things are much better than they were six months ago.’ The AfDB has a team in Zimbabwe talking to officials and businesses. ‘What we have to decide in the international community is at what point we come in,’ he said. ‘The first steps taken look very encouraging’. Clearly supporting more energetic backing for the new power-sharing government, Kaberuka insisted there was no division among creditor countries: ‘The international community is at one on Zimbabwe... the political agreement that was signed is the best they could get, we are agreed. What we are saying is get it working… and then the international community will come in.’
