Votes that don't add up

The rumpus over the rerun governorship election in Ekiti State on 25 April has become a symbol of the national crisis

The political stand-off continued this week in Ekiti State after the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) announced the results of the governorship election on 5 May, which had been rerun in ten of the 16 councils in the state. Ekiti still resembles an armed camp as the national political temperature rises. The rerun pitted the People's Democratic Party (PDP) incumbent, Segun Oni, against Kayode Fayemi of the opposition Action Congress (AC). Their dispute dates back to the 2007 national elections, when Fayemi launched a court challenge against Oni's declared victory. Backed by independent election observers, Fayemi brought forensic evidence of fake ballots and video recordings of improprieties by the Oni camp.
