Crisis on the Nile

The confrontation over the Nile waters, which pits Egypt and Sudan against the five downstream countries, is escalating into a major regional crisis following the collapse of a ministerial meeting in Addis Ababa on 26-27 June. Egypt and Sudan opposed moves by the downstream countries – Ethiopia,Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya – to agree a new formula to share the Nile’s 84 billion cubic metres of water more equitably.
