With the political endgame well under way for President Hosni Mubarak, his government is expanding its nuclear ambitions. Given that Mubarak has been a loyal Western ally, his nuclear programme and plans for uranium enrichment and reprocessing have, unlike Iran’s, attracted little critical attention in Washington. Indeed, some Western states point to their nuclear cooperation with predominantly Muslim Egypt as proof that their campaign against Iran is about politics not religion. That could change should Mubarak or his successor decide to allow free elections: such polls might well be won by the currently banned but flourishing Brotherhood, whose ideological positions are close to Iran’s and those of the Sudanese regime, which also seeks nuclear reactors (AC Vol 51 No 17).
