Election delays and doubts

The sudden postponement of the 19 September second round of the presidential election raises fresh doubts about the military’s commitment to handing over power and the prospect of a tougher line on foreign mining companies. The postponement followed a meeting at the office of Prime Minister Jean-Marie Doré, which included the two candidates, Cellou Dalein Diallo and Alpha Condé; interim President General Sékouba Konaté; his trusted Secretary General to the Presidency, Tibou Camara; the two Vice-Presidents of the Conseil National de Transition, the de facto legislature created to oversee the transition; and representatives from the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Political Affairs and the Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante (CENI).
