SWAPO suffers bee stings

Elections next month and rumbling financial scandals around SWAPO-linked businesses could boost support for the opposition

The opposition was cheered by a legal victory last month, when the Supreme Court overturned the Windhoek High Court's dismissal of an application by nine opposition parties to have the results of November 2009's National Assembly elections declared null and void (AC Vol 51 No 4). That case will now be heard. The Rally for Democracy and Progress, the breakaway from the governing South West African People's Organisation led by former cabinet minister Hidipo Hamutenya, hopes to be the main beneficiary of any turning against SWAPO over the scandal. In the wake of the ruling, the RDP ended its boycott of Parliament and its eight members have taken up their Assembly seats to become the official opposition. However, the High Court is more likely to order a recount of the Assembly votes than a rerun of the whole election.
