How Kibaki blocks the ICC

The International Criminal Court is blocked at every turn as it tries to investigate political violence

At last President Mwai Kibaki's bluff has been called. The pious hopes in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly last month about peace, democracy and development belie his government's obstruction of the International Criminal Court's investigation into the violence that followed Kenya's general elections of 2008 (AC Vol 51 No 17). Kibaki and his senior ministers want the ICC to drop the case. They refuse to hand over official records from 2007-08 requested by its investigators, who visited Kenya at the end of September.
