Intrigue over the ownership and profits from the rich Marange diamond fields is causing dissension in State House

The growing political crisis over the management of the rich Marange diamond fields shows how important this huge new revenue source is for President Robert Mugabe, politically and personally. Mugabe and his Mines Minister Obert Mpofu refuse to acknowledge criticism from the Kimberley Process watchdog about the accountability of Zimbabwe’s fast-growing diamond industry. The collapse of the Canadile Miners company operating in tandem with the government in Marange will have serious political consequences.
