The EU pays but keeps silent

Opposition candidates declared the first round of the presidential election on 23 January tainted (‘vicié’), putting President François Bozizé’s 64.7% share of the vote in doubt (AC Vol 51 No 25). The European Union, which had paid 60% of the cost of the election, kept quiet. Bozizé had thrown out the previous EU Ambassador, Jean-Claude Esmieu, after he claimed some ministers were corrupt. His successor, Guy Samzun, also French, is saying nothing. The opposition candidates are furious.
