Rebels and revenge

In Sierra Leone’s far interior - including Koinadugu district, with some diamond and gold deposits - the remains of the ousted Armed Forces Ruling Council/Revolutionary United Front (AFRC/RUF) still loot, mutilate villagers and abduct children as porters and possible recruits, in a war of revenge and retribution. It is likely to grow fiercer soon, as the rains end. In July RUF fighters under the command of Sam Bockarie, aka ‘Maskita’, were said to have massacred civilians on capturing the small northern town of Kabbala and subsequently abducted some 200 children.
