South Sudan

How the South moves north

As Ethiopian peacekeepers deploy in the contested Abyei Area, Khartoum’s strategy to keep it in the North grows starker. Northern opposition to the ruling National Congress Party is getting more robust, particularly from the ‘marginalised areas’ of Blue Nile, Southern Kordofan and, the 14 July peace agreement notwithstanding, Darfur. The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Northern Sector (SPLM-North), Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Sudan Liberation Movement-Abdel Wahed (SLM-AW) are all using or threatening force against Khartoum.
