Disrespect for the President

Disciplining Julius Malema is only part of Zuma’s effort to reassert his control of the ANC and win re-election as President

True to form, President Jacob Zuma acted decisively only when his personal position as leader of the African National Congress came under threat. He wants Julius Malema, President of the ANC Youth League, expelled from the governing party. President Zuma had long hoped that Malema would ensure his re-election as party leader and presidential candidate at next year’s National Conference. Now Julius Malema and the ANCYL are campaigning to replace Zuma as ANC President and Gwede Mantashe as General Secretary. Malema is charged before a disciplinary committee with sowing divisions in the party and bringing it into disrepute.
