Zuma and Malema are marshalling their forces for a showdown. Even a probe into ‘the arms deal’ is involved

President Jacob Zuma’s mid-September decision to form a commission of inquiry into the controversial arms deal of the late 1990s is being widely seen as an attempt to forestall the judicial inquiry that the African National Congress Youth League leader, Julius Malema, and many others are demanding. The move needs to be seen, ANC insiders say, in the context of the power struggle between Malema and Zuma. The governing ANC has postponed Malema’s much anticipated disciplinary tribunal until 6 October.
