The Security Council lands a new African problem

Nigeria calls a debate on worsening piracy in the Gulf of Guinea

The United Nations Security Council does not lack for African problems: the continent’s woes take up about three quarters of the Council’s time. Later this month, a new issue will be added to the other UN Africa portfolios, which include major missions in Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Congo-Kinshasa, Guinea Bissau, Sudan and South Sudan. The UNSC will debate piracy and contemplate greater international engagement with a spreading problem.
