Critics still not welcome

The Addis Ababa newspaper Awramba Times has all but closed following the late November flight abroad of Managing Editor Dawit Kebede. It is the latest manifestation of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's well-known distaste for dissent, which appears to be growing amid fear of Arab Spring-style unrest and sensitivity over the regional impact of the colossal Grand Millennium Dam (now called the Renaissance Dam) project, which the local media has criticised. The paper’s Deputy Editor, Wubishet Taye, was picked up in June on vague terrorism charges and has been in detention in Addis Ababa ever since.
