The road home

On 17 August, the Southern African Development Community failed in its third attempt to reconcile feuding Presidents Marc Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina. Rajoelina overthrew Ravalomanana in March 2009 and is now Transitional President (AC Vol 53 No 14). SADC’s Troika, chaired by South African President Jacob Zuma, with colleagues from Tanzania and Zambia, had already brought the rivals together in July and in August. SADC wants to calm things down in preparation for a presidential election in May-July 2013, as proposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission and supported by the United Nations.
