The mass killings in the Tana River Delta presage an upsurge of violence ahead of elections next March

As two mass graves are discovered in the Ozi Forest, acting Internal Security Minister Mohamed Yusuf Haji is at the centre of claims of official involvement in the Tana Delta killings. There are also reports of widespread abuses by a 1,800-strong force of General Service Unit (GSU) paramilitaries sent from Nairobi to quell the rebellion. After long-standing communal tensions exploded in six weeks of retaliatory violence, the graves at Ozi discovered just outside Kilelengwani village on 17 September indicate that the death toll could be far higher than the 113 previously confirmed.
