France, at least, backs President Laurent Gbagbo. The head of a team it sent to help draw up aid requests (AC Vol 42 No 4) is none other than Jean-Michel Severino, who on his return became head of the Agence Française de Développement on 18 April. He pushed for devaluation of the CFA franc in 1994, is an ex-Vice-President of the World Bank and wants to change France's traditional ways in Africa.
