Nairobi’s governing passions

The race to be governor of the capital is tense, filled with drama and defying the expectations of the experts

The Nairobi gubernatorial race – part of the 4 March general elections – is turning into one of the most fascinating political battles of recent times. The city’s economy is worth an estimated US$20 billion and the governor controls an annual budget of 5.2 bn. Kenya shillings ($174 mn.). The two leading candidates are the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) Evans Kidero, a smooth-talking former head of Mumias Sugar Company, and Ferdinand Ndung’u Waititu, the Party of National Unity’s combative member of parliament for Embakasi in the dense, south-eastern, lower-income suburbs. The outcome depends on how the ethnic vote breaks down and how the two present their very different visions for the capital.
