Pitfalls ahead for foreigners

The Kenyan elections and the International Criminal Court case against presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto pose serious challenges to foreign business. Britain and the United States have both made it clear that they would prefer Kenyans not to elect leaders charged with crimes against humanity. London initially said it would have no direct contact with Kenyatta or Ruto if they were elected, even if they complied with the ICC. British companies, however, are worried. Anglo-Irish Tullow Oil, for example, has just found commercially viable quantities of oil in Turkana and fears the consequences of a business ban on a Kenyatta-Ruto government.
