Ethiopia's security chief, Kinfe Gebre Medhin, was shot four times in the back outside the Armed Forces Officers Club in Addis Ababa on 12 May. The murder hits Prime Minister Meles Zenawi personally and politically. Since 1991 Kinfe's title had been General Manager of Security, Immigration and Refugee Affairs. In effect he was Minister of the Interior, and Meles' close political ally on the Central Committee of the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the core of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front.
