The end, when it came, came quickly. On 24 March, the Séléka rebels fought a fierce battle with South African troops before overwhelming them and invading the capital, setting off a wave of looting. On 25 March, the Defence Minister under the interim cabinet agreed at Libreville on 11 January, Michel Djotodia, declared himself President. Nicolas Tiangaye, the Prime Minister designate, is expected to remain Premier. He and Djotodia have said they will work together and hold elections, as planned, in three years’ time.
