Sexual congress

The suspension of Congress of South African Trade Unions Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi on 14 August, after he admitted to sexual misconduct with a Cosatu employee in his office, is a victory for President Jacob Zuma. Vavi has been one of Zuma’s most trenchant critics and Zuma’s Cosatu allies, especially its President, Sdumo Dlamini, have had their knives out for him for some time. The sex scandal gave Dlamini the perfect excuse to strike, as Vavi himself ruefully admits.
