Renamo and Frelimo back to the fray

The violence stems from quarrels between leaders, not popular grievances, but the situation could spiral out of control

The unilateral decision by the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana to abrogate the 1992 General Peace Agreement with the Frente de Libertação Moçambicana may not critically threaten long-term stability but it embarrasses the Frelimo government and raises questions about its record in power. Afonso Dhlakama and his Renamo fighters have no international support, have falling electoral support and lack trained fighters and weapons. Yet their operations have been enough to panic several of the foreign companies operating in Mozambique. That seems to be part of the Renamo plan, such as it is.
