Kampala ousts mayor

A thorn in President Yoweri Museveni’s side was removed when Kampala City Council voted to depose the Lord Mayor, Ssalongo Erias Lukwago, of the opposition Democratic Party on 25 November. The government has enacted harsh laws on public assembly and arrested peaceful oppositionists in a bid to suppress free speech. However, his impeachment was done by the book. Erias (also spelled Elias) Lukwago said: ‘There’s no respect for the constitution, for the rule of law and for democratic governance’.
