Geingob at last

In November, veteran SWAPO leader Hage Geingob will take over one of Africa’s most stable political systems

Under outgoing President Hifikepunye Pohamba and the Prime Minister and president-to-be, Hage Geingob, the governing SWAPO Party approaches November’s general elections more united than ever. Geingob, 73, looks set to repeat Pohamba’s 2009 performance in gaining around three-quarters of the popular vote. Geingob may even do better, thanks to his more populist style. While his Damara ethnicity will not endanger SWAPO’s traditionally rock-solid support from the northern Oshivambo and Kavango, who account for some 45% of electors, it may also appeal to minority ethnic groups.
