Stolen votes

In Israel for medical treatment this week, President Gnassingbé Eyadéma faces unprecedented foreign pressure over the stolen 21 June presidential election. Eyadéma wanted the poll to given him enough legitimacy to persuade the European Union and United States to restore aid flows to Togo’s crumbling economy, which hasn’t recovered from the political street fighting of the early 1990s. Instead, the overt theft of the election by Eyadéma’s supporters means not just that EU and USA aid won’t be restored but that French aid could be at risk for the first time.
