The appointment of Federal Capital Territory Minister Lieutenant General Jerry Useni as head of a taskforce to tackle the chronic gasolene and diesel shortage is having little effect. The minimum demand for gasolene and diesel is 114,000 barrels a day while production from the local refineries (Kaduna is closed while Warri and Port Harcourt are at much reduced capacity) is little over 50,000 b/d. One reason for the slow reaction, Abuja sources say, is that Gen. Sani Abacha, who rarely leaves the Aso Rock presidential complex, was not briefed on the gravity of the situation.
