Mountain death

The Defence Minister’s death on 28 January is a hard blow for regime and army. Colonel Firmin Sinzoyiheba and four others died when their helicopter crashed during a storm in mountains as they flew to Gitega for a meeting on the ‘national reconciliation debate’. Chaired by Major Pierre Buyoya (AC Vol 38 No 10) this gathered all political groups except for the armed opposition. On 30 January, Buyoya told visiting French MPs that he accepted international mediation in Burundi, which is under sanctions by neighbouring countries.
