New telecommunications technology may be expensive but it's coming to Africa – fast

The internet and Africa might look like an odd couple, when only 12 million out of around 700 million people have telephones. Yet there is great excitement in Africa about the new medium and new websites open daily. Many professionals and business people see the net as Africa's fast track to information, business and even development. Meanwhile, exiles and outsiders use it to track events that Western newspapers rarely report. A website or homepage is an interactive World Wide Web (www) address, usually free but often linking up to subscription sites. Random searches of African websites turn up all sorts of unexpected information, from breaking news to business profiles and radio broadcasts.
