The government is now beginning to feel the pain of indulging its sweet tooth
There is no likelihood in the near future that the International Monetary Fund will resume lending from its US$220 million balance of payments support. The Kenya government has tried to put an optimistic gloss on the talks held in Mombasa at the end of August between President Daniel arap Moi and the IMF's Deputy Director, Goodall Gondwe, and its Nairobi representative, Reimer Carstens. The delegation had followed Moi to the coast, where he had gone to help calm the political waters (AC Vol 38 No 16) after a still unexplained raid in which a police station at Likoni was overrun and 40 people from upcountry were killed. After the opposition blamed the government, two Kenya African National Union officials were arrested but, as we went to press, had still not appeared in court.
