Two small islands declare independence while demanding recolonisation by France

The Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros has again sprung a surprise on the world, with two of its three islands calling (separately) both for independence and for recolonisation by France. After much to-ing and fro-ing by its special envoy, Ivorian diplomat Pierre Yere, on 25 August the newly assertive Organisation of African Unity called a conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, next month to discuss the crisis. This follows violence and calls for independence by separatist groups on the islands of Anjouan and Moheli.
