Opposition demands for political reforms before the elections unsettle President Moi

Delaying the elections, probably until November or December, is beginning to look like a major error by President Daniel arap Moi. Even six months ago, his ruling Kenya African National Union would have been assured of a clear run in the polls against a chaotic and divided opposition. Now the opposition, still no model of political coherence, has united temporarily behind demands for constitutional and electoral reform. Most of the still active citizens' groups and church leaders support the demands, as do many Western donors.
