Turn out for the Field Marshal

The election result was never in doubt but polling was extended in the hope of improving El Sisi’s mandate and obtaining a better turnout

Abdel Fatah Khalil el Sisi will start his presidency knowing that a significant proportion of the public has faith in his pledge to bring security and eventual prosperity through patriotism and hard work. Yet polling was sparse on the first day, 26 May, and the desperate measures taken by the government and the Presidential Election Commission to boost numbers betrayed concern about the degree of opposition, scepticism or indifference.
