Nuclear secrets

A US$50 billion agreement with Russia to build up to eight nuclear reactors has raised the alarm in South Africa about the speed and secrecy with which the 'strategic partnership' was announced. A former senior official in South Africa's Eskom power company told Africa Confidential that 'concerns about the accountability and value for money' of the Russian deal 'were ten times greater than the scandal over the $6 bn. arms deal' with European suppliers in the late 1990s.
