Changing faces

It looks as if the one-time external security boss, General Fernando Garcia Miala, is being groomed for a key role in the Palace. Sacked in 2006 from the Serviços de Inteligência Externa and detained in 2007, Miala has been quietly brought back into the inner circle. A well-connected, multi-lingual Africa expert, he works on foreign assignments, mainly in Central African Republic and the Great Lakes, but with no official title. 'I wonder if Miala was brought back because President José Eduardo dos Santos needs him for a future job or because he really needs his expertise now,' said a well-placed family friend.
